How to Add Character & Charm to Any Space: Interior Design Tips for a Unique Home

Have you ever looked around your living room and thought, “This space feels so boring, how do I dress it up?” You’re not alone! At Julius Design Co., I hear this all the time, and that’s exactly why I created my latest video: to show you simple, actionable ways to transform any room no matter your style or budget, into a space that feels warm, inviting, and uniquely yours.

Why Layering is Everything

One of the most powerful tools in interior design is layering. Mixing different fabrics, textures, and design elements, from pottery and glass to metals and stone, instantly adds depth and interest. Don’t be afraid to combine stripes, suede, and solids. The magic happens when you mix and match, creating a space that’s visually rich and full of personality.

Quick Wins: Throws, Rugs, and Texture

Want a fast and affordable way to add dimension? Throws are your best friend. In the featured living room, I used a soft green throw with varied textures and a plush, thick throw on the sofa. These little touches make the space feel cozy and layered.

Don’t overlook your surfaces! A live-edge coffee table introduces organic, imperfect wood textures, while a mix of books, vases, and even metal accents on your table keeps things interesting. For the fireplace, adding stone brought in new colors and separated the wood tones from the painted walls, creating a more dynamic look.

And here’s a non-negotiable: every living space needs a rug. Whether you have kids, pets, or a busy household, a rug grounds your room and ties everything together. I recommend a neutral rug with soft, organic stripes to pull in various elements and keep the vibe cohesive.

Personalize with Meaningful Decor

The best spaces tell your story. Choose decor that means something to you. This can be art pieces, vintage vases, or anything that sparks joy. These details are what make a house feel like a home. Don’t be afraid to incorporate live plants or floral elements for a fresh, lively touch.

Budget-Friendly Designer Tips

  • Mix wood tones and textures for a curated, layered look.

  • Use throws and pillows to add instant color and softness.

  • Layer books and small decor pieces on tables for visual interest.

  • Opt for neutral, textured rugs to ground your space and make it feel complete.
